What is a legend
The Legends are our cultural heritage and were kept through generations by word of mouth. The stories were told in front of the fireplace in the evening, and although they're not considered accurate as historical sources, they give us a hint of how we used to live and maybe even reveal some secrets of life.
You are listening to a legend in a place connected to the story. We encourage you to look up and imagine how the surroundings looked in ancient times.
We owe great homage to everyone who kept the legends for generations. They would be lost today without all the people who told their children the stories. We also owe great gratitude to those who later collected and transcribed the stories. This heritage exists today because of the work of men like V.U. Hammershaimb, who also established the Faroese orthography, the linguist Jakob Jakobsen, and the local historian Andreas Weihe.
We have translated and adapted the legends to modern language. We have also changed the structure of the reports to make them suitable for audio recording and storytelling. But we have, of course, stayed true to the original stories.
This project is only possible with the support of local authorities. The municipalities that committed to the project have made it possible, and their wish to preserve this cultural treasure has been inspiring. Please enjoy!
